Our primary purpose is to provide cooperative, affordable housing to college students. We achieve this by buying our food in bulk and cooking our own meals, as well as doing most of the maintenance and all of the general cleaning. By sharing living expenses with other members, cost of living is generally less than living on your own.
The co-op is an ideal place to meet new people and be a part of a strong community. Members often find that a family type of support group forms within the houses.
Cooperative living benefits the earth through the common ownership of possesions and sharing of resources, for example, to prepare our dinners, we make two trips to the grocery store per week and use two ovens - something that would take 60 trips to the store and 60 ovens if we each lived alone.
The Students' Cooperative Association is a non-profit, student owned and governed housing cooperative located in Eugene, Oregon. We have 24 spots in the Lorax Manner at 1648 Alder Street, 36 in the Campbell Club at 1670 Alder, and 21 spots in the Janet Smith at 1790 Alder for a total of 81. We accept applications from any individual attending an institution of higher education in Lane County, enrolled with at least 3 credits during the school year and 1 credit during the summer. We welcome students from all walks of life, nationalities, age, religion, racial and ethnic backgrounds, and sexual orientations.
We have openings immediately and we encourage anyone interested in living with us to stop by for dinner and meet us to see if cooperative living is for you! The Co-ops stand out from any other student housing available because members don't sign a lease or have a landlord. Members sign a contract that makes all members part owner of the houses. Since the houses are owned by the members, everyone has an opportunity for input as to how the Co-ops are run. Our houses are co-ed and normally have graduate as well as undergraduate students. The Co-ops attract people from all over the United States. We strive to foster diversity while creating a strong sense of community.

The Janet Smith Student Cooperative is a co-ed house that caters to graduate students. In all other aspects, the house will operate like the other S.C.A. co-ops in that resources, space, jobs, and good times will all be shared. Joint functions between all three S.C.A. houses will be frequent.
The JSH holds up to 16 members living in 14 singles and 1 double. Fees, as they do in all the houses, include room, food, utilities, laundry detergent, and toiletries. During the school year, per-term prices are $1,150 for a single, $990 a term for a small single, and $875 for a double.
The Lorax was founded in 1990 by a group of environmentally active students. Its name was inspired by the late, great Dr. Seuss' character the Lorax, who speaks for the trees. This is why we use the word manner instead of manor, to signify striving to live in an environmental way. Lorax cooks prepare vegan meals to the membership of up to 25 students.
The 28-member Campbell Club is named after Wallace J. Campbell, an alumnus of the University of Oregon. His senior thesis entitled Depression Cooperatives inspired a group of men in 1935 to begin a co-op named after Wally Campbell. Mr. Campbell went on to found C.A.R.E. and lead the cooperative movement on a national and international level. The Campbell Club still thrives today and is a feline friendly living environment. At the Campbell Club both tofu burgers and the real kind are enjoyed.
