The McNair Scholars Program seeks qualified students who have an interest in doctoral-level study and who will begin the junior or senior year in the fall. This program helps low-income/first generation or under-represented students prepare for graduate school. Students benefit from the program in a variety of ways, but the most obvious is a stipend for completing a summer research internship ($2,800). That research experience involves students working with faculty on manageable, meaningful, and original research projects, producing papers of publishable quality and delivering oral presentations of findings at a symposium held winter term. The symposium is open to the public and faculty are cordially invited to attend. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and have earned at least 60 undergraduate credits (but not yet have a bachelor's degree).
For further information, students should contact the Office of International Education and Exchange, 330 Oregon Hall.
"The National Merit Scholarship Corporation, in conjunction with the UO, awards merit scholarships to selected academically talented high school seniors for undergraduate studies at the University of Oregon. Prospective UO freshmen who have been awarded College-Sponsored Finalist standing, and who have listed the University of Oregon as their "first choice" school on the NMSC Scholarship Application, are eligible to receive a National Merit Scholarship at the UO." For 2007-8, the award is $2,000.
