CRWR 336: Intermediate Creative Nonfiction
Using published essays as models--memoir, profile, personal essay, landscape
narrative, among others--students will generate their own narratives,
utilizing the techniques of fiction and poetry to explore the connection
between the personal (the I's experience) and the universal (what it
means to be human). Prerequisite: Intro Course in Creative Nonfiction,

CRWR 340: Intermediate Fiction Writing
Intermediate-level study of fiction writing. Prerequisite: CRWR 240

CRWR 417: Kidd Tutorial I
This is Section 1 of a three part intensive, yearlong study of fiction,
poetry, and nonfiction. This includes development, completion, and presentation
of an individual line-of-inquiry project. Admission is by application
only. Prerequisite: CRWR 330 or 336 or 340 with a grade of mid-B or

CRWR 607: Fiction Seminar - Chekhov
This is a graduate workshop for MFA students only. Attendance is mandatory,
informed participation in discussion crucial. Chekhov is considered
by most to be the father of the short story, by many of its greatest
masters. In this seminar, particular attention to matters of craft and
form will be paid to the various stories and play read. Attention will
be paid to how Chekhov, while inventing many of the techniques of the
modern short story (and play) constructed his books. Open to Graduate

of memory in narrative form--the author's experience--utilizing the
techniques of fiction and poetry. Texts will include Charles Baxter's
anthology The Business of Memory, the online journal Brevity, and selected
works from, among others, Augustine, Sei Shonagon, Woolf, Orwell, McCarthy,
Pham, and Baldwin. Some exercises, two personal narratives, one presentation

CRWR 407: Seminar – Deconstructing Style: Words, Sentences,
the Atomic Particles of Fiction
This seminar will examine the “micro” elements of fiction
– words and sentences – in an effort to understand what
constitutes a writer’s style. Each week a short excerpt will be
analyzed, focusing on questions of diction, syntax, etymology, rhetoric,
rhythm, punctuation, etc. Some writing exercises and memorization will
be required. The goal of the course is to help students think more deeply
about the writing choices they make. Prerequisite: instructor’s

CRWR 410: Memoir & Personal Essay (Fiction)
Workshop-format course focused on memoir and personal essay. Prerequisite:
