Marjorie Woollacott has been director
of the Motor Control Laboratory at the University of Oregon since
1980. Her areas of expertise include the development of balance
control in normal children and in children with motor problems
such as cerebral palsy and Down's syndrome. She is also exploring
the factors leading to loss of balance function in the older
adult. She is currently designing new assessment and treatment
strategies to improve balance function in both the child with
motor problems and the older adult who is prone to losses of
balance and falls.
Dr. Woollacott has been with the University
of Oregon since 1980 where, in addition to her work in the Department
of Exercise and Movement Science, she has been a participating
faculty member in gerontology, psychology, and neuroscience.
Prior to her return to the University of Oregon following a research
associate position in the early 1970s, she laid ground for her
professorial career in the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and
State University, the University of Oregon School of Medicine,
Reed College, and the Neurological Science Institute in Portland.
A seasoned researcher and academician, Woollacott has received
many honors, among them fellowships into the research consortium
of AAHPERD and into the American Academy of Physical Education.
She is reviewer and coeditor of many science magazines and is
presently the vice president of the International Society for
Posture and Gait Research.
