MUS 445/545 will consider the following topics:
- Advanced Compositional Issues
- Digital recording and mixing techniques
- Algorithmic and interactive issues
- Kyma and Max
Each individual will be assigned studio times (2 studio sessions that total
at least six hours per week). During these studio times you will have designated
tasks to carry out that relate to the topics under consideration or you will
be working on your individual creative projects. Assignments will be presented
at each class meeting and a final project at the end of the term.
During the quarter you will need to purchase a number of zip disks, CD-Rs
and several DAT tapes.
There is no text for the course, however, the following supplementary texts
are recommended:
- The Computer Music Tutorial by Curtis Roads
- Interactive Music Systems: Machine Listening and Composing by Robert
Rowe
- Composing Interactive Music: Techniques and Ideas Using Max by Todd
Winkler
GRADES
The grades will be determined by:
- the quality of work you perform during the course of the term: 40 %
- the percentage of the total studio time you work in relation to the total
time you are allotted (based on 54 hours per term): 60%
Your attendance and participation are required at all scheduled meetings (weekly
lesson and group seminar). Absences will drastically affect your final grade.
In addition, there is a Future Music Oregon concert on Saturday, November 23,
at 8:00 PM. You must attend the concert to pass the class. In lieu of attending
the concert, you may write a fifteen-page scholarly essay on a topic of my choosing
(with full bibliographic references) as a surrogate for the concert experience.
This paper will be due no later than the last day of classes. Please inquire
if you are interested in this option.
