Among the third generation of musicians in his family dedicated to music education, Mr. Gearhart is a sought-after clinician, who has been featured at several state music conventions including New York, Virginia, and North Carolina.

He is currently on the faculty of University of Oregon where he teaches violin, coaches chamber music and is a member of the Oregon String Quartet. The Oregon String Quartet is made up of the primary instructors in the String Department at the University of Oregon School of Music where they provide a wonderfully cohesive atmosphere, sharing ideas and strengths between the studios.

In the 1999-2000 school year, Mr. Gearhart is teaching a seminar class on the Beethoven Sonatas for Violin and Piano which will parallel his performances of the complete sonatas throughout the school year. Each student participating in this class will learn and perform at least one of the 10 Beethoven Sonatas while studying all of them in the classroom setting. This forum provides a unique experience for the students to study a body of literature central to their instrument through several viewpoints: historical, theoretical and performance.

Throughout the years, Gearhart has been a featured clinician at music conventions and workshops in Ohio, North Carolina, New York, South Carolina, Oregon, Kansas, and has presented master classes at many music schools including Texas Christian University, Boise State University, Ithaca College, the Interlochen Academy of Arts, Eastman School of Music, and the Hartt School, among others. In 2006 he was a featured clinician at the National ASTA conference, and in 2007 he will present sessions at both the National ASTA conference and the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic.

Between 1988 and 1991 Mr. Gearhart taught at Indiana University at South Bend, where he was first violinist of the Chester String Quartet.

In addition to his college level teaching, Mr. Gearhart has conducted several ensembles, and in 1995 was the director of the Eastern Youth Orchestra in Greenville, North Carolina. Among his conducting credits are the Northern Virginia Regional Honors Orchestra; the District XII Senior Festival Orchestra in Arlington, Virginia; Salem All-City Strings, Salem, OR); Luzerne Music Center Junior Orchestra; the Wyoming String Clinic; the Lamar String Workshop Junior Orchestra in Raleigh, NC; and the South Carolina All-State String Orchestra. Gearhart has recently published Rhythm Sessions for Strings, an album of music designed to help students improve their rhythm skills (Ludwig Publishing). He often uses this material in his conducting of student ensembles. In 2005 Gearhart edited and published a full-orchestra arrangement of the Star-Spangled Banner (also Ludwig Publishing) by his father Livingston Gearhart. He currently working on several new educational publications.
