Data Readings Taken in Points A-P
Reading Room Case Study:
  • The reading room is located on the second floor of the AAA Library in Lawrence Hall. Our case study area is found on the Western end of the collection stacks. There are windows in the Southern and Western walls that allow daylighting into the space.
Data Gathering Methods:
  • The illustration to the right designates the points at which data was gathered throughout the room. These locations were selected because of the tasks performed in these areas, and their basic need for illumination. The points on the table are basic reading and studying tasks that require a high light level. The points along the stacks need a good amount of light as well for book locating, and short term visual tasks such as scanning through the books for information.
  • These readings were taken at two different times in the specified locations. These times were 2:45 pm & 9:32pm on May 6, 2000. These two different times will allow us to compare the illuminance levels in the room when there is daylighting present, and when only electric lighting is utilized.
  • At 2:45pm, two separate readings were taken. One with the shades open and the other with them closed. This was to determine the effects of the shades on the quantity of daylighting allowed to enter the room. These readings were not repeated at 9:32 pm, because there was no outside illuminance to be blocked by the shades, thus negating the need to count the shades as a variable during evening hours.
