- Instructions
- Your grade depends
upon your ability to formulate meaningful hypotheses about events and
to substantiate those hypotheses with relevant evidence (n.b.: the textbook and the editors of the document may
help you to formulate hypotheses, but their own words cannot be construed
as evidence).
- 'to formulate'
a hypothesis means to generate effective and convincing 'thesis-sentences'.
- substantiation
means 'word for word' citation of relevant clauses in the ancient
evidence.
- DO NOT INDULGE IN
WISHFUL THINKING: A GOOD ESSAY WITHOUT SUBSTANTIATION BASED ON THE SOURCES
WILL NOT RECEIVE A GRADE HIGHER THAN A "C".
- On the day of the
examination the gods will decide which two of the four questions are to
be submitted for grading.
- The Issues
(ONE ESSAY WILL BE SELECTED FROM 1 AND 2; AND ONE ESSAY FROM 3 AND 4)
- "The Olynthians induced the other cites (in the Chalcidice) to combine with one another on the basis of one system of laws and a common citizenship...and now they say unless we come in and join their league they will march against us...what we want to do is to keep the constitution we have and to live independently..." (Xenophon, V 2.11). What historical conclusions do you come to based on this observation?
- The King's Peace

Hellenic cities. Should either of the belligerents not accept this peace,
I will war against them with those who are in agreement with me, both
by land and by sea, with ships and with money. ACG 263. What historical conclusions do you come to based on this observation?
- The central features
of the intellectual revolution are: the universe is a natural whole, there
are patterns/laws of natural behavior, and humans can recognize / articulate
those law / patterns. Drawing on your readings of Herodotus and Thucydides,
discuss two passages (one from each writer) that best exemplify these themes.
How do you account for this new mode of speculation?
- It is graduation day, and your least favorite aunt / uncle exclaims: "You really are an idiot. You took Greek history! And wasted your [parents] money! What did you learn that will ever help you to get a job?" Nicols is nowhere to be found to help, so collecting your dignity, you respond "......."
