MIDTERM EXAMINATION
Instructions
The examination will be administered on Monday, 11 February, 2008, during the usual lecture hour.
Everyone must be in class in 41Library for the ID part of the examination.
Regarding the essays, the second part of the examination: You may write out the answers, but you must submit them in advance electronically; the maximum length is 600 words for each essay (please include a word count with your submission and please save the file as "yourname1.rtf" on not as midterm.doc). Otherwise, it is an 'open book' examination (tho not for the ID). Though I encourage you to study together, I will not give any credit to identical or nearly identical essays. Essays must be sent to nic.coursework@gmail.com (and not my regular email address) by 15:00 (3pm) on the exam day. Please use MSWord to write you essay, and send it as an .rtf attachment to the gmail address. You may also wish to copy yourself on the submission. You may use the computers in the classroom.
Your grade depends upon your ability to formulate meaningful hypotheses about events and to substantiate those hypotheses with relevant evidence (n.b.: the textbooks and sourcebooks may help you to formulate hypotheses, but the words of the modern authors and editors cannot be construed as evidence).
On the day of the examination the gods will decide which of the three questions is to be submitted for a grade (as noted, you may submit all the essays earlier)..
