Lara's home page
This page is always under construction. Expect potentially interesting
things to
come.
My interests include:
- Working at the library
- Web publishing
- My family
- Pete
- my husband
- who has many web pages of his own
- and likes sports
- and Star Trek
- Spencer
- who is six
- and likes the Power
Rangers, Star Wars, and Mario
Brothers.
- and is in first
grade
He has been learning at school about
- Cooperation
- Reading comprehension
- Addition and subtraction drills (currently he's starting in on the 3rd
grade math curriculum)
- Still working on handwriting
At home, we've been working on
- Beginning of multiplication, division, fractions, simple algebra
(e.g. 2x+4=14)
and geometry (e.g. parallel lines, shape characteristics that aren't the
ones you learn when you're 2)
- Chapter-book reading
- Deductive reasoning (logic problems)
- Patterns (from spring 98)
- Best of Spencerisms (and Graham too)
- and Graham
- who is three and a half
- and likes stuffed animals
- and climbing unsupported objects (and sometimes jumping off...)
- Graham's favorite movies are Mulan and The
Aristocats (especially the two dogs)
- He is learning counting and adding skills and starting to think about
phonics (he especially likes the sound mmmmm, which is odd, because
Spencer did, too). He doesn't like thinking about subtraction because he
doesn't
like the "taking away" aspect (if you have any toddlers, you know that if
they see it, it's theirs, and taking away is never the right thing.)
Gifted Education:
- Carolyn K's Hoagies, a collection of
sources, resources, articles, anecdotes about and for and by parents of
bright kids
- GT World, more on-line
community stuff, mailing lists and moos, etc
Cooking and passing off my experiments to co-workers. I bake cookies,
cakes, tarts, breads...but not pies; I have bad luck with pies.
My favorite cooking shows are
- Cooking with Caprial, a Portlander who has a fun show on PBS and a web
site at
http://www.pacificharbor.com/caprial
- Death By Chocolate, with a guy named Marcel, also on PBS
Science fiction/fantasy, such as
- Star Trek, Official:
and not:
- Earth Final Conflict
(also Roddenberry)
- David Weber's Honor Harrington series
- McCaffrey
- Lackey
- Asimov
- Clarke
If you like to buy books, you probably already know you should
visit Amazon.com, an online bookstore that has
all that stuff and other stuff too.
Going to the gym, which you
would never guess to look at me. My current favorite things to do at the
gym are the EFX machine (that would be "elliptical fitness crosstrainer,"
a medieval torture rack which combines all the features of a treadmill, a
bike, and a stairmaster, yikes), kickboxing, and pushups. Well, I mean, I
don't like pushups, and I can only do about 20 modified (knees down) or
1 regular, but I've decided I need a stronger back and shoulders.
I decided this when I started doing some reading about skeletal and
muscular structure and realized that most of the muscles of the upper
body and torso effectively hang from the shoulder girdle. Probably a good
idea for that area to be both strong and flexible.
Fixing stuff around the house (sometimes
badly, but always learning about what went wrong).
- Here is a story about what can go
wrong fixing a flat tire, even when you know what you are doing.
Sports, most particularly women's basketball and major league baseball
- The Ducks
- This year, I have fantasy baseball teams at CNN and Sandlot. The free
kind; it's a game, for heaven's sake!
Here is a link to Warren's home
page, which so far has a lot more stuff than mine. Here also is Warren's D. C. Shopping story which keeps
coming up in conversation and then people want a copy.
You can also check out the
UO home
page, but be warned, it is
bigger and more graphical than it used to be, and has been known to make
my browser sad.
