Fourth Grade - Kelp Forests

In fourth grade we study kelp forests and learn how giant kelp create a habitat for many, many organisms. We observe and study these plants and animals and their relationships, and act out how the kelp and habitat change through the seasons. By comparing different species, we learn about the many shapes and adaptations of algae and learn how people use these seaweeds. We study an amazing diversity of invertebrates and fish, and learn how they feed and live. By working with wavelengths, we learn about the absorption of light in water, and its affect on color. Through games and role-playing, we experience the impact of over fishing vs. managed fisheries, and learn about the interconnected nature of the seas. Then in a field inquiry, we collect data to answer our own questions about algae and its adaptations and distribution.
