Sixth Grade - Islands

In sixth grade we study islands. We study the different ways islands form, and the implications for their structure. We study the physical properties of sand and the biology and chemistry of coral reef formation. We learn about many of the organisms that take advantage of the isolation of islands for breeding, such as elephant seals and birds. From here, we explore the physics of flight. We learn about dispersal and colonization of islands, and island biogeography. We investigate cell biology and DNA, adaptation and natural selection. We also learn about some of the animals in the waters around islands, from plankton to sharks. And we apply what we have learned to the issues of management unique to island environments.
