PEOL 451 - Adventure Education

The purpose of this course is to examine and explore the factors and variables that contribute to the growth and development of outdoor leaders participating in adventure education experiences, with an emphasis on developing skills and abilities that help students be more effective team leaders and group members.

Content includes: semantics and definitions; communication and feedback, leadership theory, group dynamics, history and philosophy, ethical issues, risk and accidents, and leading and debriefing experiential activities. 

This course is taught experientially, with students taking ownership of a part of the course’s delivery.  The course involves a lecture/discussion/lab series and an all-day, on-campus outing.  Students gain hands-on experience leading an experiential activity.

PEOL 453 - Environmental Education

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the natural history of the region and to develop teaching and environmental interpretation skills. The focus of the course is on the natural history of Oregon (with an emphasis on oak/savanna, coastal old growth and western Cascades old growth ecosystems), and on developing outdoor teaching skills.

Course topics include: semantics and definitions, ecological concepts, teaching strategies for outdoor settings, natural history, and environmental interpretation. Emphasis is placed on using a taxanomic key to identify native trees, shrubs and flowers.

PEOL 455 - Principles of Outdoor Leadership

Wilderness Survival is a prerequisite to participation in the Principles of Outdoor Leaadership course. No exceptions!

Principles of Outdoor Leadership (3 cr.) is part of an integrated set of courses designed to prepare students for the leadership of safe and environmentally responsible outdoor pursuits programs. Lecture topics include liability, roles and responsibilities of leaders, field leadership, risk management in the field, and emergency procedures. One classroom period and a portion of the outing is reserved for van driver training.
