    Research Interests

Perhaps one of the most fascinating and challenging questions in evolutionary biology is the origin and generation of biodiversity. What causes the tremendous taxonomic diversity of extinct and present-day organisms, and how do we explain the great diversity of forms observed in most lineages? The course of research I am developing during my dissertation work tries to answer these questions by attempting to clarify a fundamental but poorly understood issue in biology, the genotype-phenotype map. I am particularly interested in understanding the genetic mechanisms of phenotypic variation and how they contribute to the evolution of traits between lineages. I focus primarily on the evolution of gene regulation in a broad sense. I use approaches at the interface between molecular evolution, population genetics and evolutionary developmental biology (evo-devo) to examine the effects of trans and cis evolution on gene regulation.
