Kristin Williamson ’06

Kristin Williamson Majors: Psychology and French.

Study spot on campus: Honors college or Knight Library.

Essential morning beverage: Green tea.

Best place to take a walk or hike: Skinner Butte.

Transport of choice to campus: Walking.

What makes the UO feel like home: The friendly and supportive atmosphere.

Greatest achievement at the UO: Graduating summa cum laude.

On studying French: I started by taking the classes for my graduation language requirement. I decided to study abroad my sophomore year.

Study-abroad location: Angers, France. I plan to return to France to teach English after graduation.

Dream job: Health psychologist.

Favorite class: A new class on Atlantic world history called Sugars, Slaves, and Revolution, taught by Dayo Mitchell. That was a really fantastic class.

Research: This was one of the first things I got involved in when I arrived at the UO. I just was really curious. I applied to a couple of different labs and got a research assistant position with Dr. Edward Awh in the psychology department in the area of cognitive attention.

Thesis topic: The influence of language on visual selective attention. I examine differences in visual processing in different language groups.

Honors college in general: It really helped me make the transition from high school to college. My classes were small. The professors are very encouraging and they really help with writing ability. They work to make you the best you can be.

Why the UO: I got into the honors college. That was a big factor in my decision. I was drawn by all the opportunities that would be available at a school that is larger, but yet I’d still be part of a smaller college within, so I wouldn’t feel overwhelmed.

Best advice for incoming freshmen at the UO: Choose your major based on which classes you most enjoy, which interest you the most, and try to establish relationships with your favorite faculty members.
