Asher Tubman ’08

Asher Tubman Transferred from: St. John's College, Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Hometown: Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Majors: Physics and Math.

On transferring: The transition went really smoothly. My physics adviser, Dean Livelybrooks, was really helpful.

Research: I am a research associate with Professor David Strom as part of the team of hundreds of scientists and engineers around the world who are working on the International Linear Collider. It feels much smaller, however, because the group from the UO and Stanford are working on a tiny piece of the pie. Still, it's very exciting, and I really look forward to this thing being built and getting a chance to see our piece of it in action.

Favorite course: The yearlong series Foundations of Physics I. It was in that class that I actually got my mind around relativity and quantum physics.

Essential raingear: A plastic bag for your bike seat.

Favorite Eugene hangout: Cosmic Pizza. It's got music, environment, coffee, and pizza all in one.

Study spot: Hilbert Space in Deady Hall.

Guilty pleasure: Spending too much time surfing the Internet. I'm a news junkie.

Best place to take a hike: Spencer's Butte.

Why the UO: I wanted to study science and I thought that Eugene and the UO would be a wonderful place to live. Also, my girlfriend is blind, and the UO was the best we found in terms of disability and accessibility programs.
