If you're considering about an internship in Africa or elsewhere, you should begin with this basic information guide for anyone thinking about an overseas internship.
The IE3 program assists students in their overseas internships, and the IE3 Orientation Handbook is packed with helpful information: chapters addressing "Health and Safety" and "Travel Preparations," as well as "Getting the Most From Your Internship," "Life After Your Internship" and a 20+ page chapter on "Cultural Adjustment" that includes activities to prepare you to start thinking concretely about the abstract realities of living in a remarkably different country. This guide can be easily adapted to your overseas plans, even if your travels to Africa do not include an internship.
While this handbook is a good preparation for cultural and professional transition, it is a not a substitute for thorough and solid research about your destination country. Country-specific resources can be found at the University of Oregon International Resource Center.
Other useful web links for country-specific information include the University of Pennsylvania African Studies Center Country Pages, the Stanford University Africa South of the Sahara Country Pages, and the Lonely Planet guides.
