What is SWAT?

The Sexual Wellness Advocacy Team (SWAT) is a group of students committed to ending sexual assault, relationship violence, and stalking at the University of Oregon. SWAT creates and facilitates workshops on consent, relationships, sexual assault, dating violence, and intervening with friends. We use interactive facilitation styles, including theatre, to create change at the UO. SWAT is a sex-positive program, meaning we do not advocate for one type of commitment or sexual behavior over another. We also recognize that some students may choose abstinence. We advocate for mutual, informed, clear consent in all sexual relationships.

Our workshops incorporate elements of Theater of the Oppressed and other community-based theater techniques. We perform for residence halls, student groups, fraternities and sororities, classes, incoming students, and numerous other groups across campus.

Highlights

SWAT is respected throughout the country as a successful model of peer education. During fall 2005, SWAT presented nationally at the Campus Training and Technical Assistance Institute through the US Department of Justice in Columbus, Ohio, as well as at the Northwest Student Leadership Conference in Portland, Oregon. SWAT has also provided consultation to peer educators at Eastern Washington University, Boise State University and Southwestern Oregon Community College.

What people say about our workshops:

“Your message is pure and very informative, and I speak for every member of Lambda Chi Alpha when I say that we absolutely loved it. We all came away with much more knowledge regarding the definition and importance of consent.”

“I love your program. It helped me last year in the halls to seek help at the counseling center for an issue of a sexual nature.”

“Great job! Very open-minded and encouraging.”

“Those committed, talented people are doing an awesome job of educating and raising consciousness!”

“This was a great presentation. It got me very emotionally involved, which is a great thing. Good to have group discussions.”

Process

We accept applications on a rolling basis and incorporate new students each term, though Fall is the preferred time to join. Due to the complexities of the material, and extensive training, we ask for a three term commitment from interns. Complete the application and return it as soon as possible. Applications with be screened by a hiring committee, made up of program staff and current SWAT members. The hiring committee will ask selected applicants to interview.
The SWAT class meets Wednesdays from 6-9pm throughout each term.

Please call or email for an application or if you have questions:

What previous interns say:

“I have learned so much about the world around me, and the ways to change it, but more importantly, I have learned so much about myself.”

“SWAT has been, by far, my favorite class in college and has challenged me in more diverse ways than any other class.”

“The triumph I am most proud of thus far, has been discovering a new passion I hadn’t known existed. I am passionate about starting discussions with people about this crucial message. Creating a safe space for open and honest discussions is so fulfilling.”

“(Through SWAT) I have started to see sexual assault in terms of its social context rather than just the statistics and facts, and I am becoming more aware of the cultural conditions that have encouraged the continuation and even explanation of this horrific crime.”

“By doing this kind of work, I’ve been impacted for the better. I say this because now I am a more educated person who is able to speak more effectively with others regarding an issue as serious as sexual assault…All in all, the challenges, triumphs, and learning experience have made SWAT an exciting, educational, and mind-opening experience.”

“Being in SWAT has allowed me to find the courage to speak my mind.”

“SWAT is, by far, my favorite class that I have taken at the University of Oregon. I feel like every time I go to class, I grow as a person. I learn so much every week, and even though I may walk out feeling a little heavy-hearted, I think the knowledge is worth it.”
