Establishment of the Award for Distinguished Service
REGULAR MEETING OF THE FACULTY
May 2, 1956
AWARDS FOR DISTINGUISHED SERVICE. Mr. L. W. Staples, secretary of the
Faculty Senate, moved on behalf of the Senate that the faculty adopt the
following plan for Awards for Distinguished Service:

(1) Individuals to be Recognized. Each Charter Day not more than three
awards may be presented to individuals who, by their knowledge and skill,
have made a significant contribution to the cultural development of Oregon
or society as a whole.

(2) Name of Award. The Award shall be known as "The University of Oregon
Award for Distinguished Service."

(3) Method of Selection.

(a) The recommendations of candidates for awards shall be made by a Selection
Committee of nine persons consisting of the following:
-
President of the University, Chairman
-
Chairman of the Advisory Council
-
Chairman of the Faculty Senate
-
Chairman of the Charter Day Committee
-
Secretary of the University of Oregon Alumni Association
-
Three faculty members at large, to be appointed annually by the President
-
President of the Associated Students
-
(b) The recommendations of the Selection Committee shall be presented to
the Faculty Senate which shall have final power of approval.

(c) Nominations may be solicited in any manner prescribed by the Selection
Committee.

(d) The nature of the award shall be determined by the Selection Committee.

(e) Those persons selected for recognition shall be notified by the President,
and invited to appear in person for the presentations.

(4) Presentation of the Award. Presentation of the award will be made during
the Charter Day Convocation. A citation covering the achievements of each
participant will be read prior to the presentation.
After discussion the motion was put to a vote and carried.
