Johnson Memorial Award Committee
The award was established by the University Assembly in 1979 to honor Charles E Johnson, a
Professor and administrator at the University of Oregon from 1952 to 1969. Johnson was an
outstanding teacher of accounting and a national respected scholar-author. He served as
acting University President in 1968-1969. He passionately believed in the persuit of
learning and understanding through the open exchange of ideas, in the university as a
laboratory for testing the whole range of thought, and in the value of reason in resolving
conflict that arises in the clash of beliefs.

JOHNSON MEMORIAL AWARD COMMITTEE
CHARGE & RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Johnson Memorial Award Committee shall be responsible for identifying
potential recipients for the Johnson Memorial Award, and forwarding suggested
recipients to the President of the University. The Johnson Memorial Award
is made to a faculty member who by action and word as teacher,
as scholar, and as citizen of the academic community has, over a period
of years, exemplified commitment to the principles affirmed by the life
and career of Charles E. Johnson.Background on this award is on file and
available in the President's Office.
MEMBERSHIP:
Membership of the Johnson Memorial Award Committee is not fixed and
traditionally consists of 3-4 faculty, Secretary of the Faculty (ex officio),
and a representative from the Faculty Advisory Council (ex officio).The
Committee on Committees shall have the authority, in its annual role of
recommending committee membership, to include a student member and/or a
member from outside the University.
REPORTING: The Johnson Memorial Award Committee shall report to the
University Senate and will make a report, in the form of suggestions of
award recipients, directly to the President of the University. The report
to the Senate will, at a minimum be in the form of an annual written report
submitted by the Committee Chair to the Secretary of the University Senate
no later than the final University Senate meeting in May. The committee
shall also make additional written or oral reports to the Senate as necessary.

7.1 Since 1991-92, all non-elected committees established by faculty legislation
are appointed by the Committee on Committees, a committee appointed by
the University Senate. The Secretary of the Faculty shall coordinate the
elections of faculty to elective committees. The secretary shall arrange
for the filling of vacancies on elected committees and councils by notifying
the next eligible candidate, determined in descending order of the number
of votes received in the most recent election for the relevant committee
or council. If no eligible candidate is available to fill the vacancy,
the Senate Executive Committee, with advice and recommendations from the
Committee on Committees, shall appoint an eligible faculty member to fill
the vacancy until the next regular election cycle. Filling a vacancy shall
not preclude the appointee from standing for election to the same committee
or council during the next election cycle if eligible.
