Regular meeting of the Assembly of the University of Oregon 9 April 1980

The meeting was called to order by President William Boyd at 1535 on April 2, 1980, in room 150 Geology. The President asked if there were any corrections to the minutes of the meeting of March 5. Mr. John Sherwood asked that a substitute memorial for Alice Henson Ernst be entered in the records to replace one given on March 5, 1980. There being no objections the memorial was accepted. There being no additional corrections the minutes as amended were approved.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: CONDON LECTURE LECTURER: Mr. William Holser announced that the Condon Lectures Series will be resumed at 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 9 when William A. Fowler, Professor of Physics at the California Institute of Technology will lecture on "The Age of the Universe, the Galaxy and the Chemical Elements." The lecture will be in room 150 Geology.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

Grading Policy: Mr. Paul Holbo moved as follows, "It is moved that the following sentence be added to the second paragraph on grading policy, as described in the minutes of the meeting of December 7, 1979: 'Any recording of a grade point average (GPA) may not exceed 4.00'."

The motion was seconded, after which the Senate secretary reported the Senate vote on this motion was 28 in favor, none against and five abstentions. After a brief discussion the motion was put to a vote and carried.

Code of student conduct. Douglas Haldane offered the following motion: To revise Section IV, 571-21-085 of the Code of Student Conduct to read as follows: 'If the student admits to the academic dishonesty incident, the faculty member may enter a grade, Up to and including a failing grade, for the entire exercise in which the incident arose. The incident may also be referred to the coordinator of student conduct if, in the judgment of the faculty member, disciplinary action is warranted.

The student may appeal the grade entered, for the exercise, to the faculty member's department head and, ultimately, to the dean of the college or school in which the incident originated'."

Following a second the Senate secretary reported the vote of the Senate as 6 in favor, 21 against, and one abstention. Following discussion by Mr. Haldane and a few others, the motion was put to a vote and defeated.

ABSENT SENATE MEMBERS Mr. George Struble presented the following motion: "The secretary of the senate shall declare a senate position vacant if a senate member is absent from three consecutive senate meetings, unless the member has declared to the secretary of the senate his or her intention to participate fully in the senate in the future.

Following a second, Ms. Edna Wooten-Kolan presented the senate vote as 26 in favor, none against and one abstention. After a brief debate the motion was put to a vote and passed.

ADJOURNMENT

There being no further business the meeting adjourned at 1615.
