REGULAR MEETING OF THE ASSEMBLY UNIVERSITY OF OREGON June 4, 1980

The meeting was called to order by President William Boyd at 1540 on June 4, 1980. There being no corrections, the minutes of the meeting of May 12 were approved as distributed.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

Advisory council Mr. Paul Holbo was recognized to summarize the report of the Faculty Advisory Council for 1979-80 academic year. The text of the report is attached with these minutes.

Academic Standards Committee: Mr. Stanley Greenfield briefly summarized the work of the Academic Standards Committee. The text of the report is attached with these minutes on pages 2 and 3. Following Mr. Greenfieldis summary, Mr. David Hubin raised the following question: "Recent reports of the College Course Committee of Arts and Sciences have included new courses entitled Supervised Tutoring ( _ 409). It was my understanding that the recommendation of the Academic Standards Committee in 1979 was that no credit for tutoring be awarded in the academic departments. Could Professor Greenfield clarify the position of that committee on this issue' Mr. Greenfield responded as follows: Your understanding is correct. There were two aspects to the issue: 1) while students might be learning something in the process of tutoring, what they were learning was not properly their departmental subject matters; therefore the practice of giving credit in a student's major for tutoring (in 409's) was something that violated academic standards. (A survey of Department Heads and Deans showed substantial agreement on this matter.) Thus, the ASC recommended the establishment of a special Arts ~ Sciences prefix and number for a course in tutoring to be offered through LRC, a course which all departments and schools should use when registering students for credit for tutoring and such a course, prefix, and number were established last Spring in CAS 2) since the real learning in the tutoring process is limited, and most work being done as tutoring should instead be paid work (i.e., students were improperly, if understandably, being awarded credit in lieu of pay), the ASC recommended further that there be limit to the number of hours of credit a student could receive for tutoring; and this is the case under the new rubric. "The committee was perhaps at fault for not giving this solution to what had been a problem wider publicity. I hope this response will be recorded in the Assembly minutes, and this recording will serve that turn."

There being no unfinished business, President William Boyd adjourned the meeting at 1555, his final meeting as President of the University of Oregon. Marshall Wattles (Secretary of the Faculty)
