As a private instructor in brass instruments, Ira has been recognized highly for his teaching, and many of his students are now successfully teaching and performing throughout the United States. In the area of brass performance, the Brass CHoir, which Ira organized when he first came to the University of Oregon, became an outstanding ensemble from its inception, and each year it has performed at the campus and many other areas of the Northwest.
Ira also organized and regularly performed with the Faculty Brass Quintet, which has performed both on campus and in many areas of the Northwest, including a successful tour of Alaska in 1971.
Ira took over the directorship of the High School Summer Session in 1952. Since that time the summer session workshop has become one of the most successful music workshops in the West. Each year this event has attracted high school musicians from almost every state on the West Coast.
Ira D. Lee will certainly be missed by his many friends, students, and colleagues in music. He will be remembered as a truly friendly and outgoing person who was able to share his enthusiasm for his profession and for life itself. I will, of course, always remember him as a close friend and associate, as we worked together for many years in the instrumental musi-c program in-the School of Music.
