Mel Aikens specializes in the study of Japan and Northeast Asia with special emphasis on comparative archaeology and Japanese prehistory. His most recent work is "Pacific Northeast Asia in Prehistory" (Washington State University Press, 1992), edited with Song Nai Rhee. Two earlier books on the region by Dr. Aikens include "Prehistoric Hunter-Gatherers in Japan: New Research Methods" (University of Tokyo Press, 1986), edited with Takeru Akazawa; and "Prehistory of Japan" (Academic Press, 1982) authored with Takayasu Higuchi. He has lectured in China as a National Academy of Sciences Exchange Scholar and is a member of the Subcommittee on Archaeology of the NAS Committee on Scholarly Communication with the People's Republic of China.
