As director of the Southeast Asian Language Program, Kathie Carpenter has developed and overseen the beginnings and growth of Thai, Indonesian, Filipino, and Vietnamese language study at Oregon. With the support of an Apple Computer cooperative faculty equipment award, she has developed innovative materials for teaching Thai and Indonesian on the Macintosh computer. Her recent publications include "Subordination by re-duplication in Wetan," in Studies in Language (1996) and "Short term survival vs. long term learning in Southeast Asian language instruction," in Journal of Southeast Asian Language Teaching (1993). Dr. Carpenter's research focuses on Thai and Indonesian language acquisition by children, and also advises and researches immersion language programs for elementary school-age children.
