Michael Fishlen teaches courses in the areas of classical Chinese language and literature, literature and law, and Chinese law. His research ranges from poetry of the late Tang and earlier periods to topics in Chinese and American law. A member of the Oregon State Bar since 1988, he has taught U.S. law and international business law in Xi’an and Xiamen, and has worked as a lawyer in Shanghai. Dr. Fishlen is the author of several articles on Tang poetry, and his latest, "Wine, Poetry, and History: Du Mu's 'Pouring Alone in the Prefectural Residence,' appeared in 1995 in T 'oung Pao, a European journal of Sinology.  After serving as head of the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures for four years, he has returned to work on two book-length manuscripts.  One is a contextual reading of federal and state Indian law cases during the Marshall era (1801-35), and the other is a reading and translation of poems by the late Tang poet Du Mu (803-52).
