Robert Kyr is the composer of more than 70 works, including five symphonies, numerous vocal and chamber pieces, and music for non-Western instruments (especially for gamelan). He is the founder and director of the Pacific Rim Gamelan, a multicultural performing arts ensemble which includes a Balinese gamelan (gong kebyar). Each year, the group presents a three-concert series, during which it premieres at least ten new works for gamelan orchestra. Dr. Kyr is writing a book of interviews with composers working in a North American context which includes extensive interviews with several artists of Asian origin. He is also the director of the Vanguard Concert and Workshop Series, the Oregon Composers Forum, the Music Today Festival (a three-week concert series featuring twentieth-century music from around the world), and the Composers Symposium of the Oregon Bach Festival
