The Globe-Wernicke Company of Cincinnati, Chicago, Boston, and New York produced a sectional bookcase system based on stackable units. Along with the Weis Manufacturing Company of Monroe, Michigan, the C.J. Lundstrom Manufacturing Company of Little Falls, New York, and the Gunn Manufacturing Company of Grand Rapids, Michigan and others, Globe-Wernicke produced lines of bookcases intended for use in commercial and domestic settings. The dependence of law offices and libraries on book storage made them major patrons of the new system of stacking units, and growing home libraries encouraged their use in domestic settings. The appearance of complete stackable bookcase units was accomplished by providing bases and tops between which the stacking cabinets could be placed. Therefore, the bookcase could increase in size by adding units and still retain the overall appearance of single piece of furniture.
