Using basic materials such as concrete blocks and 2 x 4 studs, low cost storage could be constructed in existing basements. By isolating the area under a bay window or porch, a basement storage room could be constructed using only one new wall. A corner conversion could be easily accomplished by installing two new walls. Slatted wooden shelves and a window for ventilation provided effective ventilation for stored fruits and vegetables. Stacked wooden crates raised slightly off the floor added more storage space for apples or potatoes and onions. The concrete floors of basement rooms for root vegetables and fruit storage could be sprinkled with water to temporarily raise the level of a space's humidity if goods began to wither.
