During Americans' participation in World War II, citizens commonly grew their own produce in so-called "Victory gardens" to supplement the food supply for their families. Constructing an underground storage cellar for produce from the "Victory Garden" sometimes required specialized design and materials. This concrete cellar is placed four feet underground and four feet above ground with the excavated soil used to mound over the top of the structure. An adjustable louvered vent in the door and a pipe set into the ceiling provide cross-ventilation. The walls are lined with slatted wood shelves to hold canning jars.
