Grades will be awarded based on an absolute basis of 90-100% = A, >80-90% = B, 70-80% = C, 60-70% = D.   If you have chosen the P/N option, a total score of at least 70% is required to receive a P (pass) in this course. A course grade of incomplete (I) will be considered only for individual cases with cause. An incomplete grade is not meant to be a substitute for an undesirable regular letter grade.

Exams: Make-up or early exams will not be given.  All exams are closed book.  Please bring #2 pencils and an electronic calculator to exams.  Calculators cannot be shared.  Student Identification Cards must be brought to each exam and may be requested by the instructor.  Any materials (including calculators) brought to quizzes or exams are subject to inspection.  Please be advised that written exam answers may be photocopied before they are returned to you.  Contact the instructor if a written answer was not graded properly, but do not make any alterations on the answer page(s); any requests to re-grade will be compared to the photocopy first.  The "hat rule" will be enforced during all exams (baseball caps or brimmed hats must be removed or turned backwards).

Weekly Assignments:  To enhance your success in this course and to help you stay current, weekly assignments are given.  All assigned problems will be checked for completion and several problems will be graded carefully.  Assignments are due at the beginning of class on the day indicated.  No late papers will be accepted.  Please read and follow the Policies and Procedures for Weekly Assignments handout.  You are advised to work the assigned problems and several more until you have a good grasp of the material.  There is no better way to learn the material in this course than to work lots of problems and examples.  Weekly assignments may be worked on as a collaborative experience.  However, when writing out your answers do your own work!  Duplicate answers will not be accepted.  Also, to get credit for correct answers, you must show all of your work, including equations, relationships and/or logic employed to arrive at the answers.

Academic Honesty: Academic dishonesty in any form, including plagiarism and fabrication, will not be tolerated.  All work submitted in this course must be your own and produced exclusively for this course.  The use of sources (ideas, quotations, and paraphrases) must be properly acknowledged and documented.  Any incident of academic dishonesty will result in an automatic failure (grade of F) for the course and will be noted in student disciplinary records.  Additional sanctions may be imposed as described in the Code of Student Conduct.

If you have a documented disability and anticipate needing accommodations in this course, please make arrangements to meet with me soon, and please request that the Counselor for Students with Disabilities, Hilary Gerdes, send a letter verifying your disability.

Remember, we are here to help you.  Let us know if you are having trouble or need advice.  Don’t wait until just before an exam if you have questions.  Work at staying current.  It is very easy to fall behind and too difficult to catch up.  The more engaged you are in your education, the better it will serve you.

Policies and Procedures for Weekly Assignments

Weekly assignments are to be turned in at the beginning of class (11:00am) on the day due. Late homework assignments will not be accepted.   Please read the following guidelines on the submission of homework to ensure that you receive full credit. All assigned problems will be checked for completion and several will be graded carefully. Solutions to homework problems will be posted on the class web page. Homework and all other class papers can be picked up from the racks in the basement of Klamath Hall. Papers with names on them can not be returned in this manner and must be obtained from the Teaching Assistant. Guidelines for Weekly Assignments:

  1. 1. Place your

    • last 6 digits of student ID number

    • assignment number

    • due date

    • instructor's name

in the upper right-hand corner of the first page of the assignment. Be sure to put your 6-digit ID number on all subsequent pages.

  2. Please do not crowd your work. Use of another page to allow for better spacing and less crowding will make grading much easier and you will be better off for the effort.

  3. Label each question/problem plainly.

  4. Please no ragged edges from tearing paper out of a spiral notebook.

  5. Staple the pages together. Folding and notching does not work well and pages may be lost.

  6. NEATNESS COUNTS! If we can not easily read your writing or decipher your calculations, we promise not to try.

  7. Plainly show your answer by boxing or circling.

  8. All work must be shown for full credit. Study groups are encouraged but remember that all work submitted must be your work and your work only. Any violations of this will be regarded as cheating and may cause you to receive a failing grade in the class.
