A demonstration of what can be accomplishedvisually through CSS-based design. This project will focus on the creation of a new design based on the html mark-up of the CSS Zen Garden Project.
Littering a dark and dreary road lay the past relics of browser-specific tags, incompatible DOMs, and broken CSS ear the mind of past practices. Web enlightenment has besupport.
Today, we must clen achieved thanks to the tireless efforts of folk like the W3C, WaSP and the major browser creators.
The 411 Zen Garden invites you to relax and meditate on the important lessons of the masters. Begin to see with clarity. Learn to use the (yet to be) time-honored techniques in new and invigorating fashion. Become one with the web.
This course is all about creating artwork. As with any art class, we are devoting a bit of time to understand the tools that we'll be creating artwork with. Because these logical machines called computers that we use are tied to rules, our second assignment for the class will be focusing on the rules that govern the way a web composition looks: CSS.
CSS allows complete and total control over the style of a hypertext document. The only way this can be illustrated in a way that gets people excited is by demonstrating what it can truly be, once the reins are placed in the hands of those able to create beauty from structure. To date, most examples of neat tricks and hacks have been demonstrated by structurists and coders. Designers have yet to make their mark. This needs to change.
This page currently has no CSS. Your style sheet and image-content will transform this page from its current state into something else entirely. View the many designs found within the site for inspiration. Consider the goals of the many designs found within the CSS ZenGarden site - what was the designer trying to achieve? What visual or conceptual methods did the designer use to achieve these goals. Consider not only the designs you personally like, but the designs you don't like as well. For the designs you dislike, what is it about them that you think could be reworked - how would you make them better?
You may modify the style sheet in any way you wish, but not the HTML. This may seem daunting at first if you’ve never worked this way before, follow the listed links to learn more, and use the sample files as a guide. Please see the CSS Resource Guide for advanced tutorials and tips on working with CSS.
Why participate? For recognition, inspiration, and a resource we can all refer to when making the case for CSS-based design. But most of all, for your grade.
You must use the mark-up from this page. You may not alter the mark-up in any way. You may choose to not use any particular tag by giving it a style of "display: none", but you may not edit the mark-up.
As your work will be linked to by everyone else's project, there is a need to correctly provide the proper URL in this document. Therefore, everyone must create a folder at the root level on their server with the name "411ZenGarden". This folder will serve as the root folder for your project - place all necessary files within it, and name your html file "index.html".
Below I have linked the URL of this project to your name in advance. Notice the path to your project, and create that path accordingly. If you have changed servers please let me know as soon as possible so I can change the path to your project. You may choose to name your project - If you'd like that name to be included in this mark-up next to your name, email me with that name.
Due in class Monday, February 11th. Sketchs and comps due in class Wednesday, January 30th.
