The format for this part of the exam will be very much like this--i.e. questions like "Name five Salish languages". Here's what you need to be prepared for: Know where the following families are located. You don't need to know names of specific languages: Quechua-Aymara, Mayan, Otomanguean, Wakashan, Chemakuan, Kiowa-Tanoan, Keresan Eskimo-Aleut: Know the names of all three languages Na-Dene: Know four Athabaskan languages, including two from Oregon / California Salish: know five language names Algic: Know the two non-Algonquian languages of California. Know four languages of the Eastern branch of Algonquian, and five other Algonquian languages, with approximate locations. Siouan: Know six language names; you don't need to know which languages go in which families. Iroquoian: Be able to name five languages Caddoan: name two languages Uto-Aztecan: Know four Numic languages (be sure that one of them is Northern Paiute, and that you know it is spoken in Oregon), and four others Penutian: Know the five branches in California (Yokuts, Miwokan, Costanoan Maiduan, Wintuan) and ALL the languages from Oregon Hokan: Know five languages
