Field Camp

Students explore an outcrop.The summer field camp is a six-week intensive course taught in central Oregon and southwestern Montana. Students learn to describe and identify rocks in the field, map geologic contacts and structures, and interpret an area’s geologic history using their own data. Methods also include use of plane table and alidade, electronic total stations, GPS units, and air photos. Projects typically range from mapping Holocene volcanic features in central Oregon to mapping highly deformed sedimentary and igneous rocks in Montana. We take several excursions during the course to see classic examples of volcanism and structure in the surrounding region. More information about the field camp can be found at the link below:
