Supporting the Department
The English Department depends on gifts from donors to enhance our academic programs for English majors and graduate students. If you would like to make a gift to the department's general endowment fund, please mail a check payable to the English Department to:

What We Do With Your Gifts
We use donations from contributors to support a variety of academic projects, including the following:
- Capstone Seminars for junior and senior English Majors
- Undergraduate Scholarships to support study in London
- The Fund for Excellence in Graduate Studies (to support first-year graduate students while they train to become teachers)
- Travel to academic conferences, libraries, and job interviews for graduate students
- Lectures by visiting speakers
- Symposia and conferences hosted by the English Department
- Prizes for distinguished undergraduate writing
- Awards for outstanding graduate student teachers of composition
- The Northwest Review, an award-winning literary journal
If you would like your gift to support a specific activity, please indicate your preference in a note to the Department Head. We will see that your donation is placed in the appropriate fund.
Major Gifts
A number of exceptionally generous friends of the department have created permanent endowments to support specific programs and initiatives. These include:
- The Rudolf Ernst Award (a dissertation fellowship awarded annually to one Ph.D. candidate)
- The Sarah Harkness Kirby Award (for the best graduate student essay)
- The Debora Tims Ellis Scholarship Fund (for an outstanding undergraduate majoring in English)
- The H. Z. Graham Graduate Fellowship (to support a first-year graduate student in English)
- The Steven Swig Essay Prize (awarded each year for the best undergraduate student essay)
- The Eric Englund Award (awarded to a promising graduating senior who plans to attend graduate school)
- The Stanley Maveety Fellowship (for a graduate student in Renaissance literature)
- The Barbara and Carlisle Moore Professorship
The Robert D. and Eve E. Horn Chair in English- The A. Kingsley Weatherhead Professorship in English
Of course, the opportunity for more fellowships, prizes, and programs is always present, limited only by the imaginations and resources of our faculty and friends.
