EXERCISE #8A: WHOLE BUILDING BASELINE (revised 12/6/02)

OBJECTIVES: In this exercise you will evaluate and redesign a building you have designed previously. In cycle one, you will develop a performance baseline using your existing design. In cycles two and three you will redesign the building.

PROCEDURE:

1) Topic 8 involves choosing a building and using Energy Scheming to evaluate and improve building performance.

2) For cycle 1, choose a building, for example, your current studio project, that you would like to analyze with Energy Scheming. If your studio project involves a large structure, you should study a representative floor or part.

3) Develop plans, all four elevations, a building section, and typical wall section of your building. A graphic scale should appear on these drawings. These drawings may be diagrammatic as long as they show all the important thermal elements.

4) Download Ex 8A template.

5) Open the template you just downloaded, save it as "(name) Ex 8A".

6) Go to the Define menu and choose "Project..." Set the three screens appropriately for your building.

7) Plans and Elevation drawings: Choose an appropriate scale before you paste in the drawings so that all the drawings fit on the screen.

8) Complete specifications and takeoffs, schedules, etc. and calculate. Save the file.
