The Randall V. Mills Archives of Northwest Folklore, established in 1966, serve as a repository for information collected in Oregon by scholars and students of folklore. Named after former English Professor Randall V. Mills, the Archives have grown to become the largest facility of its kind in the Northwest, and are an important resource for scholars, students, and the general public interested in folklore of the region. The Archives hold over 4,000 separate collections of folklore and ethnographic fieldwork reports, including numerous video documentaries and over 7,000 slides of visual folkloric materials.
Such standard folkloric genres as beliefs, customs, jokes, games, legends, songs, dances, graffiti, and material culture are represented; as is lore from specific geographical regions, cultural, religious, occupational and ethnic groups. The Archives also contain a collection of folklore periodicals and a revolving material culture exhibit on display. Among the more extensive holdings are the Mills Archive of rare folklore books and scholarly research papers, the Gordon Archive of folk songs, and the Visual Media Archive. Items are organized primarily by genre, geographical region, folk group, informant/artists and collector. The six part indexing system makes the archival data easily retrievable. Items are continually added to the permanent collection and new acquisitions are always welcomed, provided they adhere to the standard archival format. |
