The following words are from When our soldier boy comes back
which was written by Thomas F Francis (401 S Third Street, Ishpeming Mich)
copyright 1918. Information provided by Mary Jeanne Monhardt.
- You're not forgotten tho you're gone. We surely miss your voice so dear;
And when we sing our trysting song, we mark your absence with a tear. You heard
the call "go do your bit" and with Old Glory waving high you shouldered arms
with soldier grit. And marched away to dare and die.
- How changed is home since you are gone. There's none can fil your vacant
place. And when we mingle with the throng. We fail to see your smiling face.
You answered to your country's call. And for the cause of liberty, will bare
your bosom to the ball. To save the world's Democracy.
- You've sailed away across the sea. To fight Atilla's hateful Huns. And may
the final battle be a repetition of Chalons. For God is ever with the right.
And God and right will surely win! Our Sammy's never lost a fight. They'll cop
the Kaiser and his kin.
- (Refrain) Ah. Our hearts will be a yearning. While we wait for your
returning. And we'll keep the home fires burning. Till our boy comes back.
Addendum. There seems to have been a final verse as well:
Wen your hair is silver white, and on your brow is many a wrinkle, then
may it be my delight, some kisses on your cheeks to sprinkle. Neer to me wil
you grow old. Nor would I try this thought to sever. My love for you wil neer
grow cold. No. Never. Never. Never.
