There is an old adage that can be expressed as "A refrigerator compressor runs less frequently when the refrigerator is full than when it is empty." Refer(igerator) Madness examined this statement. We conducted the experiment with a refrigerator filled with jugs of water and with the same refrigerator empty, measuring the amount of time the compressor ran. We determined compressor activity by placing a temperature data logger to the condenser. A temperature data logger was also placed inside the refrigerator to assess temperature stability. Temperature readings were compared and charted. Our hypothesis proved to be false; Although the interior temperature of the refrigerator was more stable with jugs of water, it was clear that the empty refrigerator compressor ran more efficiently.
