HYPOTHESIS

The temperature in perimeter rooms at Ginkgo House will decrease faster when the fireplace is operating.

ASSUMPTIONS AND QUALIFICATIONS

The rate of decrease will be compared to that of a control condition where the fireplace is not operating.

The furnace is not operating under both test conditions.

Outdoor temperature and starting indoor temperature are identical in both test conditions.

Gains (other than from fireplace) are identical in both test conditions.

Losses due to opened doors, etc., are identical in both test conditions.

INVESTIGATION QUESTIONS

At a given outdoor temperature and starting indoor temperature, how fast do indoor temperatures decrease when the furnace is turned off?

Under these same conditions, how fast (if at all) do indoor temperatures decrease when the furnace is turned off and a fire is lit in Gingko House's fireplace?

Does lighting a fire in Ginkgo House's fireplace lead to increased infiltration?

Does leaving the damper open increase infiltration?
