One of the most important ways in which the Humanities Center supports--and thereby helps retain--excellent humanities faculty is by offering competitive research fellowships, which provide faculty with an opportunity to focus solely upon their research for one academic term. The Center is currently able to fund only 4-5 research fellowships per year on a regular basis. We receive between 25 and 40 applications annually, most of which deserve support.
During 2000, in recognition of the need for making more of these fellowships available to humanities faculty, the Vice President for Research at the University of Oregon granted the Oregon Humanities Center incentive funding that allows us to offer two additional fellowships per year for three years beginning in academic year 2001/02.
If by the end of 2003/04 the Center has made substantial progress towards raising private funds to endow the two fellowships on a permanent basis, the Vice President will extend his pledge for two more years, thus granting us a total of five years in which to put into place endowments that will provide funding for these two fellowships on a recurring basis.
Your gift can help us to create at least two $250,000 endowments, each of which will support one fellowship per year.
