The Collaborative IRB Training Initiative (CITI)

CITI is a web-based training product that was designed by, and is updated and maintained by a number of nationally known IRB professionals and is housed at the University of Miami. It is a comprehensive program offering up-to-date information on human subjects protection issues. Program content is regularly evaluated and improved. CITI is well-respected nationally, with many large research institutions relying on the program for basic training.

CITI is designed around topic-specific modules, each followed by a short quiz. The number of modules needed for completion depends on the "Learner Group" with which a person identifies. CITI does not have to be completed in one sitting. CITI is user-friendly and available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. The CITI certificate expires after two years. The CITI learner must then successfully complete a refresher course.
