OPHS Tips for Faculty

  • Get to know your Program Analyst. S/he will be your main contact with OPHS. Knowing who to talk to can help when you're trying to meet a deadline.

  • Leave yourself enough time to complete the human subjects process before you want to begin research. Review of new protocols generally takes 2-4 weeks. Review of modifications to existing protocols takes 7-10 business days.

  • All faculty researchers and faculty advisors must complete the human subjects education requirement (CITI), regardless of whether s/he will actually be collecting data from subjects.

  • If your research is NIH-funded, please consult the NIH Guidelines for the Inclusion of Women, Children, and Minorities.

  • If your human subjects research is grant-funded the Office of Research Services and Administration (ORSA) cannot release your funds until you have an approved protocol in place. If you will be using grant money for pre-award spending or will be in design and development only for the first part of the award period, OPHS may be able to grant you an Approval-in-Principle. Contact your Program Analyst for assistance.

  • OPHS offers instruction sessions in human subjects ethics and the IRB review process. If you would like OPHS staff to give a presentation in your class, please contact your Program Analyst .

  • OPHS has created sample recruitment and consent templates covering a variety of common research scenarios. Please refer to these samples if you are unsure of how to write a form for your study.

  • Some human subjects protocol approvals may be affected if the researcher has a financial conflict of interest. Faculty may be required to submit an F-COI disclosure form if a possible conflict exists. For more information about Financial Conflicts of Interest, please visit the Financial Conflict of Interest Website.
