OPHS Tips for Students
- Get to know your Program Analyst . S/he will be your main contact with OPHS. Knowing who to talk to can help when you're trying to meet a deadline.
- Leave yourself enough time to complete the human subjects process before you want to begin research. Review of new protocols generally takes 2-4 weeks. Review of modifications to existing protocols takes 7-10 business days.
- Both you and your faculty advisor must complete the human subjects education requirement (CITI).
- OPHS has created sample recruitment and consent templates covering a variety of common research scenarios. If you've never created a consent form before, this is a good place to start.
- If you are a graduate student enrolled in a program which awards degrees through the Graduate School and you plan to use your research as part of your thesis/dissertation/final project, you must have a Research Clearance Form [PDF] on file with the Graduate School before you can graduate. Submit a copy of the form signed by you, your faculty advisor, and your department chair with your protocol application materials. In addition, submit a copy of your thesis/dissertation proposal or a copy of the methodology section of you project. OPHS will review the proposal and the human subjects protocol for consistency, sign the Clearance Form, and forward it to the Graduate School.
