There are research opportunities available in the Hutch Lab for postdoctoral associates, graduate students and undergraduates (see how you can become involved below). Our research projects focus on the design, synthesis and study of molecular materials with interesting electron transport properties. The results from this research are relevant to biological electron transfer (e.g. photosynthesis and oxidative phosphorylation) and in micro- and nano-electronics. The primary goals of the research include:
Developing new methods of functional group directed molecular assembly on surfaces
- Synthesis of chemical building blocks this aspect of the research involves primarily organic and inorganic synthesis
- Development of molecular assembly methods this work involves polymer chemistry, surface modification and surface/nanostructure characterization (using methods such as XPS, AFM, STM, FTIR-ERS).
Investigating electron transport in molecular assemblies
- Electrochemical investigation of charge transport through molecular assemblies
- Electron transport measurements through low-dimensional patterns of molecular assemblies on surfaces
Please visit our research project pages to learn more about our on-going projects.
We are currently seeking a postdoctoral associate skilled in preparation and characterization of molecular assemblies on surfaces. Experience in surface analytical methods and/or scanning probe microscopies a must. To apply for a postdoctoral position in our group, submit a cover letter describing your relevant experience, a CV (including a list of publications), and the names of three references (simultaneous submission of a letter or support from your graduate advisor along with your application is helpful) to:
- Professor James Hutchison
- Department of Chemistry
- 1253 University of Oregon
- Eugene, OR 97403-1253
- hutch@oregon.uoregon.edu
We are seeking graduate students interested in working in an interdisciplinary environment, involving synthetic chemistry, surface/nanostructure preparation and characterization and electron transfer measurement. Find out more about applying to the department of chemistry by visiting our main departmental web page.
There are a number of opportunities for undergraduates to gain valuable research experience while contributing to the group's research efforts. To learn more about research opportunities for undergraduates, check out our undergraduate research page.
