IFS Resolution regarding the Chancelor Search

The following resolution deals with the Chancelor Search as outlined in IMD 1.040  It was drawn up and unanimously passed by the Interinstitutional Faculty Senate (IFS) 27 October 2001. Currently, the search process is very vague, but following the State Board meeting of 5 October it seemed very clear that, although there was an avowal of intent to be open about the search, faculty would most likely play a minimal role. IFS wishes to make the decision makers of the Board aware of our grave concern about the unilateral approach they seem to be taking to an issue in which all of the "stakeholders" in public higher education, especially those who are the essence of the system, should be intimately involved.

IFS RESOLUTION

Whereas the principle of shared governance is no less critical to the successful administration of the Oregon University System than it is to the successful administration of the individual campuses;

Whereas the Oregon State Board of Higher Education has outlined a search process for the next Chancellor that does not include formal faculty participation; and

Whereas such participation is imperative to ensure a selection process and a result that enjoys the full support and confidence of the OUS faculties and other constituencies of the next chancellor;

Therefore, be it resolved that President VanLuvanee and the Directors of the Oregon State Board of Higher Education should create a new process that specifically includes formal participation by one or more representatives of OUS faculty in the evaluation of candidates and the selection of the new chancellor.
