Course Description:

This class is dedicated to a cross disciplinary discussion of the ongoing projects of graduate students from all of the areas the department of art. Part of the dialogue this term focus on the change in the way contemporary artist define themselves. These days it is possible to go to a gallery to see a painting show and find that most of the "painters" are showing video art or doing installation. This is true both at student shows, commercial art galleries, non-profits and international biennials. Artists however, or even whether, they identify with a particular medium tend to choose a medium and process on a by project bases. There are a number of factors that have lead us here; conceptual art, event art, cultural integration of new technologies, and so forth. Graduate Students at the University of Oregon identified enough with a particular medium to apply to UO as either a painter, a printer, a textile artist, a photographer, a sculptor, a ceramic artist, a metalsmith, or a digital artist. What use do these categories still have in art education if they are not really being used in the wider art community?
