Hagfish are jawless, cartilaginous fish. They are the
invertebrates most closely related to vertebrates. They live deep in the
ocean and eat the carcasses of dead fish and other animals. They
defend themselves by secreting copious amounts of highly glutinous slime.
A hagfish can fill a bucket with slime in a few minutes. We had to
dissect some because we want to understand how their hormones work.
