diglib: selection for digital conversion
I just finished reading a very interesting article entitled "Selection for
Digital Conversion in Academic Libraries" by Paula De Stefano in the
January 2001 issue of College & Research Libraries. In it she looks at
collection development from the beginning (the printing press and moveable
type) up through modern collection development in academic libraries. She
also looks at selection guidelines that have been used for preservation
microfilming over the years and makes a recommendation for a model to be
used for digital libraries. I'd be especially interested in hearing Bob's
and James' reactions to the article because of the different approaches
they have taken to their digital projects and the fact that she clearly
comes down in favor of one approach over the other. I think this article
could help us in some of our work. If anyone would like me to make them a
photocopy of this article, let me know.
