diglib: microfilm & digitizing
We hosted this workshop about three years ago. I don't know who attended
from UO other than me, Richard Bear and Carol Lenocker. It used to be a
microfilming workshop but has evolved to included comparison of digital
preservation methods; mostly to answer the question "why do we still
microfilm?"
Kodak has developed a piece of equipment called an Archive Writer, which
accepts tiffs and outputs them to microfilm. currently it is only available
for 16mm film, which has too small an image to retain the information depth
that we seek through microfilming. I have been pushing them to offer the
larger film, but no luck yet. This seems like a very good solution to
creating of a permanent surrogate for imaged manuscript collections like
Ingebretsen, where the content matters more than the object. See

For those who don't receive this mailing, I've left in the one item of
potential interest to this group. I'm sure this is not news to Normandy.

NEDCC SEMINAR ON PRESERVATION OPTIONS
"Preservation Options in a Digital World: To Film or To Scan," will be held
March 27, 28, 29, 2001, at the Minnesota Historical Society, St. Paul
This seminar on preservation microfilming and digital imaging of paper-based
materials will evaluate an emerging digital technology against a set of
preservation criteria and a proven preservation microfilming model.
It is designed to teach administrators critical thinking and criteria
for evaluation: how to plan and implement projects, how to evaluate
technology as a preservation strategy, and how to understand the
relationship between costs and quality. Instruction will focus on
compliance with national and international standards as well as best
practices for both microfilm and digital imaging. This is not a
technician training program. It is a management seminar with a
preservation focus.
After an introduction to fundamental preservation strategies, the faculty
will present lessons learned from a decade of investigations in the
viability of using digital technology for preservation purposes. The
curriculum includes in-depth discussion of the following topics:
preparation, selection, and analysis of source material; microfilm
quality control; the basics of digital imaging technology; project
workflow; preservation concerns; cost and quality; and microfilm/digital
hybrid approaches.
The presenters include: Becky Ryder, Preservation Librarian, University of
Kentucky; Bob Mottice, President, Mottice Micrographics, Inc.;
Paul Conway, Head, Preservation Department, Yale University Library;
Millie OConnell, NEDCC Preservation Consultant.
Attendance will be limited to 18 participants and early registration is
strongly recommended. The number of applicants from any one institution
will also be limited. The cost of the seminar is $275.
